Asphalt is a composite material consisting of bituminous binder and mineral aggregate mixed together then laid down in layers and compacted. Asphalt is a very commonly used as a road wearing surface.

Non-Traditional Asphalt Types

In July 2018 a trial of a non-traditional asphalt mix containing recycled crushed glass, plastic bags and printer toner was undertaken in Rayfield Avenue, Craigieburn, in Hume City Council. The aim of the trial is to prove that the use of recycled material in road construction is economically viable as well as environmentally responsible.

Close the Loop and Downer the companies that have jointly developed the asphalt claim that it will last up to 65% longer than traditional asphalt.
