I first heard Starcrawler in about mid 2019. Bet My Brains was one of a few dozen songs I had saved to a Google Play Music playlist to give a listen. I had probably listened to it about 4 or 5 times over a period of a couple of months before it had grown on me enough to decide it was time to check out if the band had any other decent songs. Often when I find a new song I like from a new band, I'm less than impressed with their other material, but Starcrawler was a different kettle of fish. I quickly ripped through their back catalog, and found a whole slew of songs I liked, with Hollywood Ending and No More Pennies being special favourites.
Hollywood Ending - Starcrawler, 2019
I couldn't believe my luck when they toured Australia in January 2020 and I got to see them at the Croxton Hotel, which is almost just down the road from where I live, and then came back in July 2022 and played at the Espy in St.Kilda.
So cool to see an up-and-coming international band playing at a pub just down the road. The band put on a great show, but I was a little disappoint with the sound mixing. The music was great, but Arrow's voice was drowned out part of the time, and one of the best voices in contemporary rock music needs to be heard.
Would have to be one of the best gigs I've ever been to. You can tell that they pride themselves on putting on a good show and the crowd was going wild. Arrow has great stage stage presence and she was really ripping out the vocals. A couple of the new songs were even better live than the recorded versions. Henry got out into the audience for the last song, and Arrow crowd surfed a couple of times. Don't see a lot of that these days.
